Tom Richard Pipes
Tom Richard Mehret is the artisan behind Tom Richard Pipes (TRP Pipes). Tom is from northern Germany, perhaps one of the best locations on the planet to be a pipe smoker. While an architecture student, Tom discovered how satisfying woodworking could be. Tom was also an avid pipe smoker, so it was only natural that he try his hand at making a pipe.
Living so close to Denmark, Tom took the opportunity to visit many of the great Danish Carvers. Over the course of several visits to Poul Winslow, Poul encouraged Tom to start making pipes. Between 2001 and 2002 Tom made pipes for his own collection, but in 2003, after a visit with German master carver Rainer Barbi, Tom created the first “Tom Richard Pipe.” Initially these pipes were offered on eBay Germany, but quickly became popular in the European pipe community.
Tom makes his pipes out of premium briar and 4,000-5,000 year old morta. His stems are made from German Ebonite. Tom regularly uses exotic woods and other decorations like bamboo, snakewood, boxwood, rosewood, and others. Tom describes his pipes as “Danish Border hand made pipes,” paying homage to the large influence in design, craftsmanship, and quality of his neighbors to the North. We think you’ll be as pleased with them as we are.
