This is a fascinating pipe from Greek carver Yorgos Mitakidis. Is it a pot, or a lovat? Or both? It seems odd that in the entire English canon of shapes, this particular combination of long round shank and short saddle stem paired with a shorter bowl isn't more common. GBD made some examples, but these were usually bigger pipes with oval or paneled shanks. This pipe looks like a cross between a 1920's Dunhill and a pre-transition Barling, and that's high praise. The jet black, craggy sandblasted bowl is perched delicately on a pencil shank extending to a short, crisp saddle of black ebonite. But even with all of these vintage aspects, the pipe still retains an element that is completely distinct to Yorgos, with the full, lower bowl cheeks and forward momentum. It may look unassuming from a distance, but those who know pipes will definitely notice this one.
