Details
A rare gem from Dunhill, pipes from the 1940s are uncommon, for obvious reasons. Few pipes were produced just after the war, and of those that did manage to make it to production, after 78 years even fewer survived. Over all those decades, this patent Dunhill Shell is in remarkably good shape. The best feature, besides the impeccable bench crafted shaping, is the finish. This is nearly the perfect example of what we love about the Shell finish. Incredibly detailed, but with the soft, warm, reddish peaks, this era of Shells are not blasted as heavily as pipes from the 20s and 30s, but retains the precise shaping that heavier blasts often obscure. The chamber was overreamed at some point, but it is clean and without any major charring or damage. One final note, there was not enough room on the bottom of the shank for a full impression of the patent number, but the top half is legible. We all know Dunhill likes to pack information on their pipes, and sometimes space is limited. If you've been hunting a 1940s pipe for you "Dunhill over the Decades" collection, this will make a fantastic addition.
