All too often we see professional pipemakers perfect their shaping skills at the detriment of the natural beauty present in the briar they work with. Shaping is important and it requires a great deal of labor and practice to hone, but exceptional carvers strive to marry their lines and curves to the inherent grain present in the briar, which even after a lifetime body of work, doesn't always cooperate. This pierced nautilus from Chris Morgan is a prime example of skill and luck as the briar delivered concentric circles of growth rings to wrap itself around the side of the stummel highlighting the curve of the horn, without a flaw and as consistent as if it had been carved by nature. A horn ferrule is a nice organic touch and the long stem balances this magnificent finished smoker. Narrow enough in the chamber for a virginia, this brilliant sandblasted and American handmade draws so well that any favorite blend will be a blessing.
