C. Martin Pipes
Among pipe makers certain personality traits are over-represented. It takes patience, attention to detail, and no small amount of stubbornness to make a high grade pipe. Chris Mattioda embodies just how far many of these traits with take you in a short time. The young pipe maker from Enumclaw, Washington, has progressed immensely since he began carving in earnest in 2022.
After discovering that his automotive hobby was not as fiscally sustainable, as he’d hoped, Chris began searching for suitable substitute, one that would satiate his desire for detail and difficulty, but hopefully prove a little easier on the pocketbook. After a brief stint making pens, Chris stumbled onto a YouTube video by renowned carver Jeff Gracik. He was captivated by the elegance of the shapes and the meticulous attention to the tiniest of details.
Thankfully for all of us, this newfound passion for pipes propelled Chris from a simple hobbyist, to an up and coming pipe making professional. Every C. Martin pipe is a is a testament to his natural talent and temperament. Most of Chris’s work is based on the now well established canon of Danish freehand shapes with a clean execution that is purely American. We were particularly impressed with the impeccable fit and finish, and the high precision and polish of his hand cut stems. Please take a moment to look at the wonderful work of Chris Mattioda.
