Brian Orton
Brian Orton carves pipes out of Grants Pass, Oregon. Unlike many pipe makers, who rehash the same canon of shapes over and over, Brian’s pipes are incredibly non-derivative. While these functional sculptures are broadly pipe-like, Brian takes an incredible amount of time and effort to create modern pipes that are nothing like the one your grandfather used to smoke.
While there are similar themes between many of Brian’s creations, no two are exactly alike. His finishing is the star of the show. Texturally, Brian’s pipes are an experience. One of only a few pipe makers that rusticates the stems as well as the bowls, the finish is not some simple rotary tool affair. The level of detail and intricacy, pattern and design, truly makes these pieces unique. In addition to the texture, Brian is not afraid to play with color. Blues, greens, tans, and yellows are all vibrant and eye catching. He even uses a weathered finish quite similar to German carvers like Wallenstein and Maier.
The subject matter and overall feel of Brian’s pipes are also somewhat unique. Lovecraftian and gothic elements permeate Brian’s aesthetic as well as themes taken heavily from nature. The final product is something incredibly unique, and while this style might not appeal to everyone, those who appreciate artistic whimsy with a touch of the outré are certain to love Orton Pipes.
